Topic:

The following are the steps to configure and start the RSI FLEXlm license manager on Windows as a service. (The instructions use IDL 6.0 as an example but the steps can be applied to previous versions of IDL and other RSI products for Windows as well.)

NOTE: The installation location of "lmgrd.exe" and "idl_lmgrd.exe" has been moved to the C:\RSI\FLEXlm directory for IDL 6.1 and later, regardless of the location of your IDL installation.

Discussion:

1. On your designated RSI product license server machine, run the RSI License wizard program (e.g., Start->Programs->RSI IDL 6.0->License) and enter permanent network floating license. Be sure that the DAEMON line of the license file points to the "idl_lmgrd.exe" in your RSI product installation. For example:

    DAEMON idl_lmgrd "C:\rsi\idl60\bin\bin.x86\idl_lmgrd.exe"

Note, the DAEMON line of the license file should reference the newest version of the "idl_lmgrd.exe" program that is available on your system.

Additionally, if you have another FLEXlm license manager service running for a different vendor, be sure that the port number at the end of the SERVER line of the RSI product license is different than that for the other vendor's license file. For example, by default RSI product licenses use port 1700:

    SERVER myserver 12345678 1700

If another vendor's license file also has SERVER port number 1700, you can change the RSI license port number to a different unassigned value such as 1701 instead.

2. Launch LMTOOLS.exe (example: C:\RSI\IDL60\bin\bin.x86\lmtools.exe)

3. Select the "Configuration using Services" button.

4. Select the "Configure Services" tab.

5. Enter in a Service Name (we recommend "RSI FLEXlm License Manager") and hit the Tab key. The next 3 fields below should appear empty. (Note that overwriting an existing name with a new name in the "Service Name" field will only add a new service name -- this will not affect the existing service name settings.)

6. Browse to the path of lmgrd.exe (example: C:\RSI\IDL60\bin\bin.x86\lmgrd.exe).

7. Browse to the path of license.dat (example: C:\RSI\license\license.dat).

8. Browse to the path of debug.log (Choose a path and file name. If it doesn't already exist, then the file will be created).

9. Mark the "Use Services" checkbox.

10. Mark "Start Server at Power Up" checkbox if you want license server to start at bootup.

11. Click on "Save Service".

12. Choose Yes to "Save".

13. Select the "Start/Stop/Reread" tab. Make sure your service name is highlighted.

14. Click on Start button. (If the service is already running, click on the Stop button to stop the service and then start it again with respect to the new license configuration.)

Notes:

  • You can perform license server status enquiry under the "Server Status" tab.

  • For information about configuring floating license clients to get licenses from a network license server, please refer to the IDL installation and licensing guide.

  • Only one instance of the FLEXlm license manager service (any name) should be started on a single license server machine for an RSI product license file. Configuring/starting multiple FLEXlm license manager services for two different RSI product license files, even with different SERVER line port numbers, but on the same machine may result in system conflicts.

  • Multiple instances of the FLEXlm license manager service may be run simultaneously (under unique names) as long as the services are started with respect to different vendor license files which should be configured with unique port numbers on the SERVER line of the license files.

  • If needed, download the latest 32-bit lmtools.exe for Windows NT/2000/XP from
